    The theory of galaxy formation starts shortly after the Big Bang.  The elements created after the Big Bang were hydrogen and later helium.  Massive clouds of gas began to accumulate, forming the beginnings of what would later become galaxies.  Many  clouds began to swirl around their dense centers, which soon became supermassive black holes.  Soon the first stars formed, and continued to orbit the centers. Due to this phenomenon galaxies came into being.

   This page will attempt to explain the various shapes and types of galaxies.  There are many varieties, but can be grouped into three categories:

Spiral Galaxies

Barred Spiral Galaxies

Elliptical Galaxies

Irregular Galaxies

Peculiar Galaxies
